The world of techno has one godfather, and his name is Juan Atkins. Atkins not only shares his surname with a very silly diet, back in the late 1970s he also invented what would become the techno genre, and he has maintained his status as a huge creative influence on the direction of virtually every electronic sub-genre ever since.

"Starlight," released under the Model 500 moniker, is perhaps Atkins' most famous track as an artist. Originally recorded in Berlin in 1993 or '94 - no one really knows for sure - the cut was first released by the Metroplex label in 1995, and has since been considered a staple in DJ boxes around the globe.

Now "Starlight" has been released on CD; the release, aptly named Starlight, features nine new remixes of the classic track to bolster the market appeal of the original. Although a number of big names like Sean Deason and Soultek have contributed remixes to the collection, unfortunately Starlight has the feel of something we've all heard a million times before. The rehashed vibe of the collection is undoubtedly due in large part to the strength and ubiquity of the original track, but can also be owed to the fact that techno has become a genre where remixes are so common that they've nearly become a parody of themselves, most having a sour, mass-produced taste. Whatever the reasons, Starlight is ultimately a big yawn.

This collection seems destined for file sharing networks; it is hardly worth purchasing, as one listen through the ten tracks is more than enough. After a single spin only the original track truly resonates, and within minutes the remixes are all but forgotten. It's a little sad, frankly, considering the debt the electronic genres owe to Atkins and the seemingly timeless strength of "Starlight" in its original tune. When it comes down to it, however, the nine accompanying remixes are rather boring and complacent.
