MUSIC

» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

» Live: Surfer Blood/The Drums at Lincoln Hall, Chicago, IL - Remember when Weezer used to put together records that you could sing along to and rock out to? That's what Surfer Blood's show was like!

1. Resembling or representing the atmosphere; having or giving the effect of translucence: a painting suffused with a hazy, atmospheric glow.

2. Intended to evoke a particular emotional tone or aesthetic quality: lush atmospheric touches in every room.

Much in contrast with their ex-band Mineral, whom they still manage to sound a lot a like, the Gloria Record play a very un-American brand of rock and roll. Airy and thin but nimble guitars and plenty of dreamy synth and piano floating around above a largely unnoticed rhythm section that serves only to keep the high end from drifting off into space. If Luna's Dean Wareham were playing guitar in Travis, they might sound something like this. On "The Arctic Cat" Simpson and Brian Hubbard blast out of the gates with a very driven dual guitar roar but quickly back off the crunch and resume their lazy Aladdin like magic carpet ride.

With the beauty and ethereal magic that the Gloria Record are able to dish out it is a real shame that they can't write more than one song. A Lull In Traffic has no sonic identity of its own, the five songs here blending seamlessly with those of their previous self-titled EP, also on Crank! What's more is the fact that they've been around, with various drummers, since Mineral disbanded in 1997 and have thus far only released a hand full of songs, all well crafted and oozing with potential but ultimately leaving the listener utterly unfulfilled.
