» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

Paul van Dyk

Rating: NR/10 ?

October 1, 2004
Paul van Dyk is truly an exemplary example of the term "globetrotting DJ," and he wants to prove it on his new CD/DVD set, Global. The album's name sums it up quite nicely; van Dyk's travels around the world, set to his cookie-cutter style of trance music, are detailed on the DVD part of the set. This disc is actually the more interesting one, offering the same seamless mix of van Dyk's classics (although each track is slightly remixed) as the CD but over footage ranging from fan adoration to traditional videos to rave and travel video. Perhaps it isn't fair to term his music as cookie-cutter, after all, the German born Paul has been at his game since the late 80's and is one of the world's most successful, influential and prominent DJ's. It is just that the type of music he spins and produces fits into the category of Euro-trance that follows the oft trodden path of risers and breakdowns, stuttering synth lines and buildups and dopamine releasing melodies that the kids just love.

Remember all that talk a year or two ago about the DJ as postmodern rockstar? Well, van Dyk truly fits that mold. His travels across the globe, from Berlin to San Francisco to Ibiza to Bangkok, are documented in a stylized and slick package. It makes this lifestyle look like a damn good time too. The music consists of previously released van Dyk tracks, such as the vocal "We are Alive" to the breakbeat inflected "Together We Will Conquer," all mixed together, showing why he is as famous as he is. The video comes off as something of a rave era Baraka, as the cameras follow him across the world and occasionally focus on themes of structure, movement, transport and grace.

Van Dyk is certainly a superstar and continues to produce and mix music across the world. His slickness is only surpassed by his fame and his mastery of wax has made him one of the leaders of trance and techno. Global is an excursion, both visual and aural, and you can join the ride for about 70 minutes with this new release.
