» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

"Mix Up the Mix" b/w "Jerks Are Creeping" 7" single
Gold Standard Laboratories

Rating: NR/10 ?

October 1, 2004
Former Le Shok vocalist Hot Rod Todd's new band, Neon King Kong, bursts forth into trebly glory on their 2001 GSL 7". Todd, listed here as Nancy Manhands, has rounded out the group with members of Teenage Heartthrobs, Lesbian Makers and The Count. The a-side, "Mix Up the Mix," is fast and high-pitched punk rock and vocals with a guitar solo to rival anything Keith Richards has ever done. "Are you excited or just wetting the sheets?" asks Todd… a bit of both, to be honest, say I.

The single's b-side, "Jerks are Creeping," is only slightly weaker but the rumbling bass opener careens into more obnoxious fumes as Todd nonchalantly screams "Hey, jerks are creeping worse than I've ever seen, with their nervous brains stenciled right on their fucking sleeves." In a city of so much hipster music, Neon King Kong stands out as unpretentious and loud, two characteristics that the A&R's go apeshit over. Or not.
