» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

The National Weather Service should issue a flash flood warning for Del Rey's Darkness & Distance. Throughout the Chicago instrumentalists' second full-length, guitar swells threaten to overflow their banks until the sandbags finally give way in "Staph & Strep" and "Deploy," which wash over you with dark waves of riffs. Forget evacuation. It's too late. The life raft isn't coming and drowning is inevitable. All you can do is pinch your nose and sink to the bottom of the album's glitchy, swirling electronica, odd time signatures and layered percussion and let the life drain out of you.

Comprised of seven spacey, post-rock explorations, the 51-minute Darkness & Distance goes where Speak It Not Aloud, the band's debut, feared to fly. The guitars sting a little and are pushed to the front of the mix, along with the double-drum kit, polyrhythmic complexities of Eben English and Michael Johnson, for a more urgent, more immediately gratifying sound that snuffs out the dreamy, slow-burning fuses of Speak. Only the epic finale "Vega", with its delicate snare drum trills and soaring synth lines, takes on Speak's leisurely pace.

Whereas fellow instrumentalists like Mogwai and the Godspeed You Black Emperor! family have quieted their dull, yet still majestic, roar, Del Rey isn't afraid to wake up the neighbors. Darkness & Distance separates itself from the Windy City's post-rock, math pack by embracing the "rock" part of that equation - check out the vitriolic opener "Asimov" and the gloomy, torrential guitar downpour of "RedFiveStandingBy." And then head for dry land because I think I just felt a raindrop.

Before that, he worked as an associate editor at a log home magazine. To anyone that will listen, he\'ll swear that Shiner was one of the greatest rock bands to ever walk the earth. Yet he also has much love for Superchunk, Spoon, DJ Shadow, Swervedriver, Wilco, Fugazi, Jawbox, ...
