» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

With all the hoopla surrounding the new new-wave and the post post-punk, a backlash seems inevitable. Bands like Radio 4, the Liars, and even somebody like Interpol, while feverishly great and exciting, are bound to receive some flak purely based on the fact that there is bound to be a bevy of less talented/original bands getting all herky and jerky on our asses. It's as if all of New York is frantically searching eBay for Gang of Four's Solid Gold at once.

There is, however, a history to this shit. Though it seems like the Rapture and bands of their ilk have appeared out of nowhere, San Diego's GoGoGo Airheart have been rocking like possessed funk-punk monsters for years. This is band that released tapes for chrissakes! Tapes!

On their latest offering, the band mix and matches influences that go beyond just that of Gang of Four (though that band is heartily represented), with everything from Love, the Pop Group, the Clash, Happy Monday's, PiL, and more modern groups like Modest Mouse, !!! and the Make Up. When the rock, punk, and funk gets played out, the band delves into dub-influenced territory that reverberates like a smoked out Jamaican dance hall.

While not completely a flawless record, what GoGoGo Airheart do best is simultaneously alienate and entrance the listener. Whether minimalizing things Velvet Underground style on "My Baby Has a Gang (Sign Our Hearts)," or clamoring out of the garage like a psychedelic version of the Hives on "Sit and Stare," GoGoGo Airheart come off like a stage production of "Hair" put on at CBGB's in the late 70's staring Wire's Colin Newman and Magazine's Howard Devoto, with live remix treatment by Lee "Scratch" Perry. Sexy? Enticing? Sick? Perverted? All of the above please.

So, dance, fuck, smoke down… whatever. Exitheuxa functions on all these levels, giving the NYC kids a run for their post-punk money. Maybe.
