» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

The Winter is Coming is the 4th release by Athens, GA, based band Elf Power and first under the Sugarfree label. It is the next chapter in the band's journey along the road through the fantasy world of songwriter Andrew Rieger.

Alongside Rieger's writing are the odd instruments and sounds created by Laura Carter which add the points of interest and wonder to the otherwise almost straightforward folk of the songs.

Where most bands claim other bands or musicians as their main influences Rieger claims J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis as his, other than those bands in Elephant 6, the collective that the band belongs to. (other bands include Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Apples in Stereo) Though all bands dislike it there is some comparison to other artists in order to describe the sounds, if only in part. Elf Power's sound is comparable to, as says everyone, The Flaming Lips. "Albatross," the closing track sounds like something Beck would put out if he had less interest in making little sense and more in fantasy and no budget, ending with what sounds like an elf dancing around and laughing at a bewildered canine. At least one song- "The Great Society" -reminds me of The Vaselines with it's somewhat hidden comments on the world around us…or that of the characters in the audio book that is being written each new album.

This album has a few raw parts but that is to be appreciated. It is difficult to get out of a CD player once it's in, it's so catchy. The horn part of the title track has been going through my head for weeks whether I am listening to it or not, so I give in … as well should you.
