CINEMA

» Blood into Wine - Any big fan of Maynard James Keenan knows that the Tool/A Perfect Circle/Puscifer frontman has been living a double life for the past several years as a winemaker/entrepreneur. But seeing as the charismatic Keenan is not the most media-friendly of musicians, it's a rare feat to get an in-depth glimpse into what the man's other passion project entails.

» Missed the Boat #6: Supergroups and Solo Surprises - In a time when more albums than ever are being made and fewer publications can afford to exist, more gatekeepers than ever are needed to separate the wheat from the chaff. Here's this month's batch of unreviewed but worth your time records that may have been overlooked.

Like the cartoon ghosts wallowing among the animated black houses on the front page of their website, Brooklyn rock trio Goes Cube has been creeping up on the scene, a startling Boo! paused on their lips. With a recently released three-song EP, a repertoire of number-titled songs, and moderate support from local venues and web distribution by an Ace Fu subsidiary label, The Family Business, the group is on their way in 2006.

Goes Cube manages in the creative traffic jam that is Hipsterville USA by keeping the musical formula simple and familiar, an aspect that many indie contemporaries manage to overlook. Much like early alternative/indie rock groups Honcho Overload and Kansas City's Zoom, Goes Cube puts together elements of dynamic song building, distorted guitars, and technical but not over-the-top drum playing. Lead singer David Obuchowski even has a similar, albeit higher toned, voice as Honcho Overload/Hum frontman Matt Talbott.

The three songs from their first EP are entitled "Goes Cube Song 24", "Goes Cube Song 25", and "Goes Cube Song 26." The novelty of being able to memorize a playlist by number alone is impressive enough (the band admits to having over 30 songs now, all recognized strictly by number), and the stamped CD and case add a D.I.Y. aesthetic, but the songs are stand-alone energetic, angsty rock material. Aside from a painfully obvious need for a better recording situation, Goes Cube could soon eclipse the normal stock of rock rehashers and failed frat boy Zeppelin cover bands. Keep your eyes peeled.
