» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.[12.24.2010 by The LAS Staff]

Boxing Hefner
Too Pure Records
?

October 1, 2004
Hefner hails from London and plays simple rock in an indie/folk kind of a way. Boxing Hefner offers up some side cuts, never befores and demolished versions of pre-recorded material. Maybe not the best introduction to my virgin Hefner ears, but songs such as "Lee Remnick" sink a sad, poppy feeling into your spine. The next thing you know, you are swaying along to sounds of slide guitar weeping to a simple bouncy bass line. The singing as boldly placed in the front of the music, creating interest towards the lyrics. The icing on this pink CD cake are the subtle background effects that kick in as the songs progress to their rockin' or poppin' state. I really dig how his voice is a bit off, key at times. It's a bit of tension that delivers genuine thoughts and proves there's authenticity woven into somewhat basic music. I imagine Hefner's other two releases more solid than this filler CD, although I still recommend it for certain songs.
