» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

A few years back (and possibly still today, I honestly don't know) the rap world was saturated with a feud, the East Vs. West Coast feud - which I'm not certain has ever been resolved. I think the biggest feud in the rock world has been the classification wars (is it post-punk, or perhaps no-wave? nah… it's just emo). Really though, big deal. The reason I bring up the rap war is the fact that this band, or a more clever me might write Disband is a mix of two distinct indie/punk sounds. Disband is able to blend your prototypical Epitaph-sounding band (West Coast) with that of the political stylings of a Dischord/DC band. And to top it off, they're from North Carolina, of all places.

The first time I listened through the album, I thought of Down By Law and Strung Out. The second time, the instrumentation and lyrics stood out more and made me think of the DC sounds of Fugazi and The Most Secret Method. Disband has some interesting guitar work and fun word play ("Baby, Your Love Makes Me Want to Write my Congressman") while not smacking you in the face with a political agenda or getting too poppy. The make for the perfect combination of both coasts - and it works.

"Capture the Flag" is the first song that jumped out and forced me to listen. A song about a mutiny, that doesn't really come across as political... weird. As far as the labeling goes, different songs strike different chords. This song has a post-punk feel, where a song like "The Worst Kisser in the World" Is almost tough pop punk a la Face to Face. There are many influential bands apparent in the music this band creates, but they mix and match them all together to make it a fun game to try and point it out in any given song.

In Small Rooms is a very strong album - in both song and structure. There are a few instrumentals thrown in to keep things moving, but to be honest the record never stands still. These North Carolina boys have power and they aren't afraid to use it and abuse it. I'll bet they put on a great live show. Word to the West Coast - these East Coast boys is representin'. You betta take a step back.
