» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

It's rare that a release leaves me with so little to say. At this point I have yet to discover the motivation for putting the short E.P. out for public consumption, simply because these songs are good enough, both content and recording wise, to have made a really solid contribution to a full-length record. Instead, Hope in Ghosts, the project of do-it-all but the drums musician Ted Flynn, provides us with a nascent four song extended player. Actually, it's only three songs, because the opening track, "Stitches", re-appears as the discs finale, sans the vocal track. For once, I actually went scrambling for the enclosed press sheet to write this review, rather than disregarding it all together.

Unfortunately, the press sheet provided little help. A brief biography of Flynn's music career, bouncing from Atlanta to Chicago to Los Angeles, and some pull quotes name-dropping Arab Strap, The Gloria Record, and Mogwai was all the help I was going to get. Admittedly, I don't know the work of the first two bands well enough to comment on the comparison, and the only similarities to the slow burn of most Mogwai tracks that I notice is the occasional use of some distortion to, as chef Emeril L. would say "kick it up a notch," and the instrumental nature of the songs. The aforementioned opening version of "Stitches" is the only track with vocals. To my ears, Hope in Ghosts sounds much more like Tristeza playing with C-Clamp's rhythm section, although there is a little shoe-gazer thrown in on "My Headphones are Broken".

If things work out well, then Hope in Ghosts won't get forgotten amidst all the bands currently using the word ghost in their names now. When mentioning the band to some friends of mine, I'm positive I said the wrong name more than once. But look for a full-length album from Hope in Ghosts to make a stir among the instrumental indie-rock fans, if and when that day arrives.
