» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

It will take some doing, but once you get past the beyond retarded album name and artwork, Hot Shit has a lot to offer in the way of making Quasi a mainstay in your household music collection. I mean honestly, what is not to like about a band comprised of two people in outrageous indie rock costumes playing songs about how fucked up the world is and racking them with memorable, humable lines like "little things that just don't matter/ can still get me as mad as a hatter/ hot shit on a silver platter". If there's anything not to like about this album, I can't seem to find it. From the dreary opening organ of the title trick that quickly crumbles into a bluesy guitar twang piped over a totally 80s drum beat, Hot Shit is a winner. Follow that up with a honkytonk-meets-Liverpool candy-coated Saturday drive classic "Seven Years Gone" and Quasi are well on their way to Album of the Year Award in my book.

For this listener/critic, one of the strongest points to be made in an argument for Hot Shit to top your stocking stuffer list this winter is the fact that it's literally all over the place in terms of sound- rich with guitars, harmonicas, samples, clattering drum kits and a plethora of samples and found sounds- and it still works, somehow, flawlessly. Top that off with the fact that Hot Shit is a concept album of un-related songs that spits, squeals, wheezes and howls through songs like the great "White Devil's Dream", a track which sees Sam Coomes echoing the fuck-you sentiments of millions toward the White House and it's lackeys overseas).

Smart, ironic, fuzzy and sugary sweet, Hot Shit is a record for anyone who appreciates well crafted pop songs in the spirit of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Highly recommended.
