» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

I'd like to book Wrangler Brutes' tour. I'd have them tour the red states and play to the Middle American Conservatives. They'd hit every strip mall, play every honky tonk tavern, VFW, barn and Church Basement. I don't think they'd sell much merch, win many new fans or convert anyone to their viewpoints - the tour would be a financial failure of course. However, on the up side, they'd sure piss off a hell of a lot of people.

When a group's mission is to play loud, fast, aggressive, political music, you'd have to think that pissing people off remains the ultimate goal. In that mission, Wrangler Brutes will surely succeed.

Wrangler Brutes are a fucking thrash band, plain and simple. Zulu contains 18 songs, played for 20 minutes with anger and hardly controlled chaos. The guitars chug intensely and the drums are hit with such force that it seems like all the instruments are on the verge of breaking. It's an album fueled by equal doses of anger, bile, and insanity. In the right circumstances, this is a combination that could incite a riot. The band consists of members of Born Against, Monorchid and Skull Kontroll - groups that knew a thing or two about aggression, spaz and snotty attitude.

What the album lacks in originality and musicianship, it makes up for in brute force. Vocalist Sam McPheeters screams, howls and plows through surprisingly lengthy diatribes. The lyrics read like paragraph narratives in the liner notes rather than clipped hardcore anthems. Wrangler Brutes' strength lies in its anger and intensity, two qualities which the group is sure to retain for as long as they are around.

Incendiary politics and loud noise - to some, this makes for two great tastes that go well together. If this pisses you off, then I guess the group has already achieved one of its goals.
