» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

For Against are the most famous indie pop band to come out of Nebraska that you've never heard of. They've been around way longer than the new cornfield explosion, predating the likes of Bright Eyes, The Faint, Cursive and the rest of the Saddle Creek roster. Formed in Lincoln in the early 80's, the band has gone through several lineup changes while maintaining a continuous sound. It's been five years since their last release, but this past December brought the light of day to some new material. Coalesced sounds a bit like the band has been caught in a time warp, but the jangley pop that they make shimmers and shivers from your stereo, obviously performed by hands that are competent.

Taking cues from The Stone Roses and early Smiths, For Against settles on one guitar sound and sticks to it throughout. It's a soft sound, slightly effected by chorus and maybe some flange, and it fills out their songs calmly and steadily. Their version of pop definitely focuses on atmosphere over hooks, and singer Jeffrey Runnings' bass playing is minimal and purposeful. The main detracting element of the album, and perhaps of their style, is that the songs tend to blend into one another. This isn't a problem for those who long for the simpler days before the complications of post-rock, but things can get a bit stagnant in this monotony. Sometimes repetition's lull is more hypnotic than boring though. The title track and the instrumental "Love You" both fixate on the same rhythmic patterns to great effect, while the album's first track, "Medication," suffers from tepid moments.

This indie pop is for the most part vibrant and creative, if it sometimes gets bogged down in its style. For Against continues a tradition of no frills pop music that references the past while incorporating original and modern elements of the band's own making.
