» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

If You Need A Reason is the debut release from Into Ashes, a four-piece band from Tallahassee, Florida. It is over twenty minutes of rock, the kind of release that makes you wonder what exactly the first full length will sound like.

Some of If You Need A Reason features a lot of intensity changes during songs, like on "Hum," where the song starts off really slow, then builds up with driving guitars and screaming vocals, climaxing and then fading away only to return with the driving guitars and vocals again in less than a minute. On the other hand, "Bury Circles" follows a simpler formula, starting with driving guitars and screaming vocals, yet this time in a much catchier way, with poppy melodies, slowing down a bit only mid-song, and never quite regaining that original speed throughout the second half of the song. "Yellow Shirts Relay" follows this second formula, as does "Relay" to a more dramatic extent, kind of shocking you right from the beginning with hardcore-sounding yells opening the track, only to lead into slower intensity that never rebuilds that early intensity.

Each track on If You Need A Reason is pretty good, which is not bad for a debut EP, yet Into Ashes isn't exactly bringing anything new to the table. It would be nice if the band could give us something a bit more attention-grabbing for its first full-length.
