» Full Dark, No Stars - Stephen King's new novella questions mankind's ability to trust others.

» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

» Live: Surfer Blood/The Drums at Lincoln Hall, Chicago, IL - Remember when Weezer used to put together records that you could sing along to and rock out to? That's what Surfer Blood's show was like!

Attempting to construct flowing, cohesive sentences about this type of music feels ironic. Wolves! (of Greece) play a mixture of musical dyslexia and panic, so as they themselves manage to put their point across in as few minutes as possible, I will try to describe them in as few words as possible.

With this, their debut release, Wolves! (of Greece) keep their seat on the edge. They draw from mid-90s emo bands such as Clikatat Ikatowi and Antioch Arrow, adopting a similar "yelped" vocal style, combined with dissonant guitar patterns that could only be called riffs at a stretch. The image presented is that of desperation and short-lived disarray, barely maintaining control of itself.

No reviewer should be na´ve enough to assume that such an impression has never been created before - refer back to Gravity or Ebullition's discography for confirmation of that - but needless to say, Wolves! (of Greece) have captured their sound without succumbing to any of the common shortfalls. The record is captivating as well as insane, and where other hopefuls of this genre adopt an approach that reeks of complacency, Wolves! (of Greece) manage to espouse a prevailing maturity about themselves.

A musical Hunter S. Thompson.
