» Full Dark, No Stars - Stephen King's new novella questions mankind's ability to trust others.

» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

» Live: Surfer Blood/The Drums at Lincoln Hall, Chicago, IL - Remember when Weezer used to put together records that you could sing along to and rock out to? That's what Surfer Blood's show was like!

Casual Friday [12" Single]
DFA Records

Rating: 8/10 ?

Why must these DFA singles be so damn good? I'm tired of writing positive reviews for this label, so please send me a stinker next time. My integrity is at stake here.

Delia Gonzalez and Gavin Russom's Black Leotard Front is no help, as this 15-minute slice of funky disco bass, swirling psychedelic synths and muted, plucky guitars are like a nice, cold beer on a sweaty Sunday, like Bloody Marys and scrambled eggs, like Friday night High Life and pot smoke.

Here's the basic story, as recounted by the lyrics on this dance-floor shake inducer: "I was leaving the office. I took off my dress. I put on my overcoat to surprise you in the flesh. It's written across my chest. You love me, you must confess. You passed the test." Sounded like a Friday to me, casual or not.

According to the press sheet, BLF is a "performance art dance troupe that includes Gavin, Delia, fine artist Christian Hostad and Daniel Schmidt - the song was created so they would have something custom-made to dance to." And so do we, even when at the half-point, the shit gets way spaced out and somebody starts blabbering in German. If you don't want a storyline, und Sie sprechen kein Deutsch, throw on the instrumental and don't worry about it. See you next Friday.
