MUSIC

» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

Three years before My Chemical Romance released their heavily Queen-influenced popular breakout The Black Parade, there was another band that dabbled in strikingly similar dark and brooding classic rock endeavors that should have been, if not bigger than, at least as large as My Chemical Romance themselves. Why weren't they? Vendetta Red are just as hooky, just as poppy, and just as anthemic, but what they didn't have was a gimmick. They're a lot rawer than My Chemical Romance's polished commercial wail as well, but without getting all dolled up in mascara and tight pants they may not be able to court their emo peers at all, sheen or not.

Vocalist Zach Davidson is quite an entity, and his presence is commanding at Vendetta Red's helm. Although his screams can become grating, his relatively clean voice ranges from a full on early Jeremy Enigk-esque wail to a soft croon that is... well, okay, latter day Enigk-esque. The music itself is your typical modern emo, but with much more of a notion of where it came from. Case in point being the albums lead single, "Shatterday," which will have Who fans recalling why they were Who fans in the first place and is the closest thing to an emo anthem there is.

Along with their music, Vendetta Red are much more lyrically accomplished than the average emo band. In lieu of tales on suburban romance and Hot Topic heartbreak, Davidson draws on his own life experiences for vocal approachest o decidedly more serious material. He tackles issues such as child abuse in the brutal "Stay Home" ("We're the sons and daughters/ daddy hates too much to kill") Perhaps the brutal honesty is part of why Vendetta Red didn't catch on with the scenesters; even Blink 182 know that songs about doing oneself in ("Suicide Party") need to have a ring to them. But fuck all those whiny and mascara'd emo bitches - they just can't handle Between the Never and Now because it's so fucking lyrically raw and in your face. Instead of trying to be "cool" and referencing Romeo and Juliet every slit-of-the-wrist line you can muster, this joint gets real like Doctor Fucking Phil. Word.
