» Full Dark, No Stars - Stephen King's new novella questions mankind's ability to trust others.

» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

» Live: Surfer Blood/The Drums at Lincoln Hall, Chicago, IL - Remember when Weezer used to put together records that you could sing along to and rock out to? That's what Surfer Blood's show was like!

Don't let the name fool you. The Cinema Eye doesn't make mood music for imaginary art films. That's Portishead's turf. Instead, these B-movie robots blast laser beams of retro synth lines at anything that moves, and play dodge ball with flaming, twisted pieces of metal guitar wreckage. A Complete Arsenal is like a rock 'n roll War Of The Worlds. Taut melodies and frenetic tempos give this five-song EP all the urgency of a city hospital emergency room.

It's what Sleater Kinney would sound like if they were abducted by new wave aliens and returned to earth as a Missing Persons cover band. Lead singer Mollie Wells wails like a riot grrl banshee, lending an air of paranoia to dirty, electroclash music that's as strident as her lyrics. Most of her songs deal with gender politics in realms both societal and personal. Down with female empowerment, she's not to be trifled with, daring somebody, anybody who has the guts to go ahead and try to "refine me, design me." Paul Rentzler's scorching guitar work is the perfect foil for Wells' impassioned vocals. He supplies dizzying harmonics in "Turn On The Battle Mode" and meaty, grinding riffs with a glam-rock strut in "What You Die For" and "Erase This Hour" as Wells and Carlos Nunez square off in a space-age synth shootout.

The Cinema Eye is Sound Virus' latest find. Once again, the label, which has released records from Blood Brothers, Liars and Pretty Girls Make Graves, has something on its hands that must be handled with care. A Complete Arsenal is dangerous and volatile and it whets my appetite for destruction. There's a full length slated for release this spring. I suggest you review the duck-and-cover method to protect yourself from the fallout.

He does draw the line at wearing blocks of chedder on his head, or any other body parts for that matter, though. His professional career has taken weird twists and turns that have led him to his current position as an editor at a coin magazine. He hopes his stay there will be a short one. Before that, he worked as an associate editor at a log home magazine. To anyone that will listen, he\'ll swear that Shiner was one of the greatest rock bands to ever walk the earth. Yet he also has much love for Superchunk, Spoon, DJ Shadow, Swervedriver, Wilco, Fugazi, Jawbox, ... And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, Queens Of The Stone Age, and Modest Mouse, among others.
