» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

DJ 2tall presents Dudley Perkins & Georgia Anne Muldrow
Beautiful Mindz
Eclectic Breaks

Rating: 7.5/10 ?

July 2, 2007
For anyone who has encountered the music of Dudley Perkins and Georgia Anne Muldrow as individual artists, the prospect of hearing the results of a project between the two is fairly tantalizing. You're thinking its gotta be a Stones Throw release with Madlib and Georgia probably splitting the production duties, yeah? While Beautiful Mindz is indeed refreshing, the surprises aren't all drawn from the album's Perkins-Muldrow collabo outcome, but from the third and fourth parties who are involved.

Instead of using any one of the numerous Stones Throw house producers (Oh No, J. Rocc, Koushik, Madlib, Roc 'C'), Beautiful Mindz is the up-to-par compositional work of UK DJ 2tall. Originally Perkins and 2tall met while recording "Atall," a cut designed for a features project that also appears as the second track of Beautiful Mindz. From that first encounter the two came to lock together both philosophically and musically, and talks of working in tandem graduated from a mini collaboration to an EP, and eventually to the current full-length product, and when Perkins and 2tall stepped into the studio to record, femme phenom Muldrow was also pulled into the mix.

The dynamic here is mostly drawn out along three lines: solid, Stones Throw type production from 2tall; hooks and some R&B, velvety-coiled main verses from Muldrow; and Dudley Perkins at the helm, hyping and then laying down some mantra-like, universe-talking mindchatter. The garnish on this plate, though, is 2tall's production, a slick blend of eclectic and soulful instrumentals, and thumpin', back-of-the-beat drum programming.

Beautiful Mindz is an album as devoted to capturing a stylish hip-hop feeling as it is to talking about philosophical and physiological matters. Imagine beats and melodies like Madlib or J Dilla, and words that read like a transcript of a George Clinton mid-concert vamping. Although they are certainly side-project material for all parties involved, the 17 tracks of this album are mostly consistent and just as good as some of the solo stuff from Perkins, Muldrow, and 2tall. In short, Beautiful Mindz is no throwaway shit. With results this solid from three artists contributing to something other than their main operations, hopefully further collectives will not be too far off.
