» Full Dark, No Stars - Stephen King's new novella questions mankind's ability to trust others.

» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

» Live: Surfer Blood/The Drums at Lincoln Hall, Chicago, IL - Remember when Weezer used to put together records that you could sing along to and rock out to? That's what Surfer Blood's show was like!

Penfold could be described in a few words and the review could be done with, but I truly think that this band is one of the most over looked, dare I say, Emo band that there is. Nine out of 10 people would use the word Emo to describing their sound to someone who had not heard the band. But the truth is that, the word Emo does not capture all the emotion that has been put into every word that comes from the singer's mouth. But how long has the word be an ample way of describing anything, and how much justice can a word do when most people hate anything having to do with or described by it?

Penfold is from New Jersey, just like every other band that seems to be gracing us with there presence. I have heard about more bands from New Jersey in the last couple of years than I think I have heard bands in general. Ok, I'm exaggerating, but there sure does seem to be a lot of bands coming from the general area. It must be something that they put in the water. This album was recorded by the popular producer Steve Evetts, who is known for recording bands such as Saves the Day, Lifetime, Kid Dynamite and many other bands from New Jersey, and then some from elsewhere as well.

A lot of bands come to mind when listening to this fine release. Maybe some older Promise Ring songs. Mineral is the strongest influence that I hear, but it seems that almost any band that is tagged with the term Emo loves Mineral with a passion. American Football is another one that I think of, but Penfold has a lot more intensity and is far more energetic than American Football, but the singing reminds me of American Football at times and that is why I mention this. U2 is another band that almost every band has been strongly influenced by and when a lot of members of so-called 'emo' bands are asked U2 will be one of their major influences. And the rest of the group of bands that other bands love to be compared to, like Sunny Day Real Estate, Jimmy Eat World, Foo Fighters, Fugazi, etc. You get the idea.
