After two well-received EP's (Richmond Motel and River City High Forgets Their Manners, respectively) and a long run of steady touring River City High have released their first full-length River City High Won't Turn Down. Hailing from Richmond, VA River City High have been kicking out the pop-rock jams since '99 and their popularity has grown alongside the popularity of this genre of music. This album, which was recorded with Tim O'Heir who has previously recorded such luminaries as J. Mascis, Superdrag, Sebadoh and Juliana Hatfield, captures the live rock n'roll sound that River City High are obviously going for here.

River City High Won't Turn Down sticks to a formula already laid down by bands of the past such as Superchunk, Face to Face, Blink 182, et cetera, a formula so blatantly obvious that it is downright hilarious to listen to this record. I swore I was going to be objective about this album, but this is just cock rock! The lyrics are simple, but not clever or catchy --"I'm in the backseat/I'm watching you drive/I'll take the backseat of this long long drive." It gets worse when they add a banjo into one song. Mary Lou Lord singing back up on "Just Wonderin'" doesn't even save this mess. They don't even sound confident in themselves when they aren't trying to sound confident in themselves.

I hear that a lot of teenagers are into this "Rock N' Roll because we want to rock" thing that River City High does, and I sincerely think that that is a crime. While listening to this album I couldn't help but notice how selfish and sneaky this shit is. It is not challenging to the listener and I really doubt it is to the band. (We've all heard songs like this so many times we could play them in our sleep.) From what I hear it sounds like they are in it for the money. I don't buy that "we just want to rock" shit. I don't understand how all of these Rock N' Roll rehash bands came out of the hardcore and emo scenes when those scenes were supposedly about new ideas and raising consciousness. This is just dumb rock posturing.
