» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

This Austin, TX band is really more of a collective of musicians than a band. There are five musicians listed in the liner notes, but, as far as I can tell, all the songs are performed as unadorned three-pieces. Apparently this is really more of a "project" involving bass player Dave Woffard and his collaborations with other "inspired young" musicians. Smacks ever so slightly of pretension, but we'll overlook it. The album is definitely worth hearing, there is a lot of interesting stuff here. While all of it is a little bit too similar to the 5ive Style/Tortoise/Chicago thing, this music is nevertheless interesting enough to hold my attention. The nice thing, too, is that this EP doesn't wear out its welcome. Long enough to peak my interest without becoming monotonous and possessing just enough variation to keep me guessing, this disc gets a passing grade as far as I'm concerned. I'm definitely interested in hearing what's next for this band.
