» Full Dark, No Stars - Stephen King's new novella questions mankind's ability to trust others.

» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

For the longest time I avoided listening to Slick Shoes because of what I had heard about them. Of course this can sometimes be a bad thing for a person to do, but I didn't feel bad at all. From what I had heard it was definitely not my style of music and I would not enjoy it. Four years later I start writing reviews for the ever popular Lost At Sea and to my surprise Slick Shoes ends up in my mailbox along with a million other albums. Was I wrong about Slick Shoes? Had I judged them too early and been missing out on the rock for that long? Not at all. Exactly like I expected, Slick Shoes are another MxPx. Now, I never even got into MxPx that much, so Slick Shoes was definitely not my bag-o-chips. [Editor's note: generic Christian punk is really nobody's bag-o-chips around here]

On the other hand, Slick Shoes are probably just about as big as MxPx and they share the same label that puts out much of MxPx's material. How is that so? How do all the MxPx fans love MxPx and also enjoy MxPx2 a.k.a. Slick Shoes? How do they not get annoyed by the fact that the two bands are so much alike that they were even on the same label.

Lyrically, Slick Shoes manage to match the assumptions. MxPx- er, Oops, I mean Slick Shoes- are another Christian punk rock band. But unlike MxPx, Slick Shoes don't hesitate to show thier faith in the heavenly father above, "Last night as I slept I saw my life slip away/ Then you were next to me/ I couldn't see your face but I knew that it was you/ Giving me a second chance". I don't know about everyone else in the world but I have heard those lyrics reworded far too many times. It's not that I have anything against Christian punk rock bands, but I can spot an unoriginal band from a million miles away. Four years ago when I made the decision not to listen to Slick Shoes because I felt I knew exactly what they would sound like, I was right.
