MUSIC

» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

I think it's kind of funny how Beck's career graph has been climbing at a 60' pitch all of these years. I think it's kinda funny how everyone loves him and people stare in wonder when he does his freaky shit. I think it's kinda funny how we all think he's a goddamn genius when no one has any idea what the fuck he's singing about or why in the fuck he's dancing like a sexy motherfucker. Now, I like Beck as much as the next guy, I suppose, but I have no illusions about him. He's a tweaked out whitey from Cali with a constant buzz from dope, acid and nitrous. The guy's a fruitcake and it's just fucking impossible to say anything profound about Beck or his records. Because they're not profound, as much as they feign profoundness. It's all jibberish.

Midnite Vultures finds Beck's often highly touted stage presence translating a bit onto tape. On Songs like "Sexx Laws" you can almost feel his hips swirling around, feel scrambling in Prince-like fashion to the layers upon layers of sound. "Milk and Honey" is easily the brain buster on this record but I'm sure the industry folk will pick up on the easily marketed Alternativeness of something like "Hollywood Freaks" and call it genius.

The one good thing is that Beck has grown up a bit and cut off all of those retarded high school "wierdo" lyrics he built himself on. Nowhere on Midnite Vultures will you find any "My tongue is a piece of wax/fallen on a termite/that is choking on a splinter" bullshit. What remains is Beck's uncanny ability to swirl Prince, Def Leppard, Run DMC, Aerosmith and James Brown influences into a potent punch for all of the kids in Lollapalooza shirts.

I do have to address the masses and this whole "sexy" thing people seem to equate with Beck. Beck isn't sexy; he's just stoned. We all think we're sexy when we're stoned. To those who want to know what Sexy with a capital S is, I would recommend the Make Up, or possibly the Faint.
