» Full Dark, No Stars - Stephen King's new novella questions mankind's ability to trust others.

» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

» Live: Surfer Blood/The Drums at Lincoln Hall, Chicago, IL - Remember when Weezer used to put together records that you could sing along to and rock out to? That's what Surfer Blood's show was like!

While it may be the ultimate cop-out, I'd like to forgo writing a formal review for this album and simply urge everyone who is into both the indie/punk dynamics of Fugazi and the overly dramatic guitar antics of a band like Radiohed to check this album out. It is neither boring nor too chaotic, and pretty much everything said about their recent teaser EP, A Sign of Breath, holds true for Demure as well. On the strength of this album I fully expect Engine Down to surpass in visibility, popularity, economy and possibility the current oh-so-hip bands like Milemarker and the whole At the Drive-In spin off tree. That said, Demure is so cleanly fabricated and assembled that it can, if the right mood not be at hand, a rather bland listen. Not bland in the sense that there's nothing to hold the listener's attention, but bland in the sense that there is little in the way of texture or character that permeates the high-gloss sheen of the songs. While Demure can certainly rock an otherwise boring, long drive across the state, it rocks the Hot Topic at the mall even harder.
