» Full Dark, No Stars - Stephen King's new novella questions mankind's ability to trust others.

» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

» Live: Surfer Blood/The Drums at Lincoln Hall, Chicago, IL - Remember when Weezer used to put together records that you could sing along to and rock out to? That's what Surfer Blood's show was like!

When Dave Pino's girlfriend dumped him, he wrote and recorded eighty songs for her, in hopes she'd take him back. She declined and the eighteen year old Pino started a band, with his friend's sixteen year old tomboy sister on lead vocals. They ended up getting signed to RCA, and just before Dave found out he'd soon be touring China, his girlfriend took him back.

This is the stuff high school legends are made of. Damone unleash super-catchy, ESPN2-inspired sk8er pop that sounds like Letters to Cleo's Kay Hanley singing lyrics that are a cross between Pinkerton's "Getchoo" and the Blue Album's "Surf Wax America," all about high school, with Weezer, circa Maladroit.

Damone's vocalist Noelle sings Dave's songs about teenage heartbreak ("I will cry to see you go/ cause you are who's inside my heart" on "Up to you"), the tribulations of teenage life ("your girlfriends treat me so unfair/your girlfriends point at me and stare" on "Your Girlfriends"), BMX-ing ("I'm rockin' a BMX bike… I don't cry whenever I fall" on "Frustrated Unnoticed"), and getting high and eating junk food (we'll get high and ride for hours/late at night we sneak and OD… [on] junk food/I am hoping" on "Carwash Romance") with a conviction as if they were her own.

Though this sort of amped-up power pop is not the sort of thing I'm into, I'm sure any girl who thinks she's a rebellious skate punk or likes a guy on a skate board is going to eat up From the Attic. And there's reason for that, as Noelle is exactly what Avril Lavigne wants to be: the Avril Lavigne for girls who think Avril Lavigne's a poseur and who swear they've been wearing ties with white tank tops when the damn Canuck was still listening to Hanson.
