» Full Dark, No Stars - Stephen King's new novella questions mankind's ability to trust others.

» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

» Live: Surfer Blood/The Drums at Lincoln Hall, Chicago, IL - Remember when Weezer used to put together records that you could sing along to and rock out to? That's what Surfer Blood's show was like!

The Speed Queen

Rating: 9.2/10 ?

January 22, 1998
The most thoroughly entertaining work of fiction I have read in a long time, The Speed Queen easily makes my all time top 10 list for books to take to the beach, on the train, or anywhere else for that matter. Just reading the first line on the back cover was enough to crack a smile: "The Speed Queen: white-trash housewife and mother turned serial killer."

Stephen King, Marjorie's favorite author, has bought the rights to her story. As she answers a list of questions into a tape recorder, the hypnotic trail of terror which landed her on death row unfolds into a cutting accusation of modern American culture. Although told through the vocabulary of a dim-witted, drug-addled American housewife, there is an unflagging intelligence to O'nan's delivery of Marjorie's story. A true modern classic for the angsty materialists that smacks of all the wit and whimsey of a Chuck Palahniuk chuckler, The Speed Queen rolls right through the pre-packaged culture that Americans invented and now thrives upon; everything from fast cars to fast food, from cheap drugs to young parents. There's even a bit of the lesbian romance that has become so trendy in the age of Jerry Springer.

O'nan has created a wonderful page turner that has everything a great book should; it is easily read but implies so much more than the type spells out. Every character, while always pushing the extremes, could pass for any one of the thousands of people flipping burgers or changing oil between New York and Los Angeles. Marjorie and Lamont are eerily similar to the neighbors down the street.
