» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

The California quartet known as Sherwood are doing their best to put a positive spin on the pop-punk scene. On A Different Light, the boys combine sunny riffs and light harmonies to counter any serious subject matter, although even that is kept at a minimum. Consider it the musical salve on the many wounds exposed in such a heart-on-your-sleeve genre.

Sherwood is a band long known for bringing healing to those harmed. On tour, they continually support and discuss organizations like World Vision and The ONE Campaign, trying to get their fan base involved in changing the world around them. And their music only serves to back the mission. Working with producer Lou Giordano (Sunny Day Real Estate, Taking Back Sunday), the band has crafted their most polished music to date with A Different Light.

"Home" is a sweeping ballad complete with Journey-esque, layered harmonies that asks what can be done "to make this home?" "Alive" evokes Beach Boys comparisons with falsetto vocals and its catchy melody. "Alley Cat" brings some electronica to the sonic party, although the relational analogy is a bit trite.

One downside to this is that much of the material from their Summer EP is repeated on A Different Light. In fact, five of the seven are found on both. However, for those who are new to Sherwood, welcome to one of the sunniest places in the alternative landscape.
