» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

I only recently discovered the stripped down magic of Pedro the Lion so I was naturally hella eggzited to find a new EP by the band in my mailbox. Yep, David Bazan is back already, this time with full-time band mates Josh Golden and Ben Brubaker, and is once again in top songwriting form.

This 5-song EP is a teaser to bridge the gap until the band records their second full length for Made In Mexico this summer. As you might expect there aren't any revelations here, just more of the exquisite folksy strumming and soothing tone of Bazan's voice.

I am still somewhat in denial about Pedro's Christian rock roots; music this good couldn't possibly come from a Bible thumper, could it? I guess so. I stand corrected and red faced for my ignorance. In a very short time I have come to acknowledge the implications of the lyrics and embrace them not for their divine value but for their humor in the context of rock music. My current favorite is a line from the opening "Criticism as Inspiration" which reads "then there's your girlfriend/she opens her legs and gives your life meaning/is that what you love her for." That is some straight talk right there and I can't help but like it. Although I am on the opposite side of the fence of faith I must applaud Mister Bazan for taking his "uncool" ideas to a very hipper-than-thou indie community and making them like it. Kudos. I don't support Christian rock (the same as I wouldn't support hate rock) but I totally dig on Pedro the Lion.

This release brings nothing new to the table but provides five more clever songs for fans of honest and soulful music. Pedro the Lion is one of those bands that you either like or don't like, no two ways about it. I like, and I think you do too.
