» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

Juan MacLean
I Robot / Less Than Human (10" EP)
DFA Records

Rating: 6.5/10 ?

June 24, 2005
Finally, a DFA single that, while good, isn't making this particular writer lose his shit, shake his ass or freak his pencil sharpener (not a good idea!).

Juan MacLean's M.O. isn't the same grimy dance-punk that his label has made practically ubiquitous across the nation; this is techno - real techno - more Eurotrash than white trash. Take a little bit of acid, mix it with bass; capable dark-lit dancefloor bangers will emerge. That's right - acid and base [bass] aren't what volcanoes are at all about - but don't get it twisted, it isn't the point.

The point is that MacLean's two tracks on this 10" EP fail to rise to the memorable status that some of his past singles have. The bleeps are nice, and some of your serotonin inhibitors may take a ride to the moon, but things are a bit too clean-cut here.

Crunk the shit down a notch, Juan; darker, my love, darker… don't be afraid to dirty it up. Still, put him in a cage match with Felix da Housecat, and we'll see who comes out scratched…
