» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

Having already caught my attention with the re-release of their debut, this is the second warm welcome I have received from this beautifully holistic threesome Aurore Rien, and while there are only four tracks to this brief sidestep, they are as satisfying as I'd come to hope and expect.

The art herein is the unquestionable technical prowess, where the focus is shifted to those fundamental pieces that might otherwise go unnoticed behind the scenes - so that the surging, sweeping instrumentation once meant solely for backdrops can fully blossom and be enjoyed.

Those who fell in love with American Football and My Bloody Valentine (just to see them later disband) will suffer a similar broken heart when revisiting this late-departed masterpiece. The tone is similarly aching, smooth, and stunning as Telesthesia winds through ethereal neverlands, seeking to touch the unknown. While each cut is admittedly long, tracks like "Hindsight 20-20" show that it is necessarily so, as the building measures make for swarming, all-enveloping grace,; the likes of which most bands cannot maintain.

While other tracks take longer to build, like "Hearts Warmer Under Halogen Lights," the atmospheric aesthetic promises a fulfilling end, and delivers as such. To some, Aurore Rien may spill out background music, but at the very least, it is the background to something inherently beautiful.
