» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

Look Now, Look Again

Rating: 8/10 ?

October 1, 2004
I'll tell you this much right now - at year's end Rainer Maria's Look Now, Look Again is going to be popping up on quite a few Best Of lists. Two years post-release and I'm still smitten with Past Worn Searching and the swirling dual male/female vocals that made it work so well. Everyone has guilty pleasures and I've no qualms about wrapping myself in the luxuries of Rainer Maria's emo-pop sweetness. Now with Look Now, Look Again, their sophomore full length, Rainer Maria have developed from anxious teens into subtle, somewhat composed twenty-somethings with an undeniable knack for the vocal flair.

The angst riddled dynamics that pock-marked Past Worn Searching have given way to a newfound confidence in Caithlin De Marrais' voice on Look Now, Look Again, her beautiful timbre pushed to the forefront and built upon like a foundation of granite.

The album benefits from a toned-down appeal that is apparent from the get-go with the opening "Rise" and its quiet cradle of vocals and minimal guitar. "Planetary" has been a staple in Rainer Maria's live show and is as close to the lovelorn shouting of Past Worn Searching as this record gets. But die hard fans shouldn't jump the gun in lamenting the loss of Rainer Maria's youthful edge - Look Now, Look Again is bulging with smart percussion and deftly rendered melodies, stumbling only occasionally when Kyle Fischer gets out of hand with his aspirations of being a world class guitar player. For the most part, however, Look Now, Look Again is a hands-down winner that might take some getting used to initially but won't fail to reward down the road.
