» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

It should be recognized that CSS - the acronym for the eponymous album Cansei De Ser Sexy or "tired of being sexy" - has many intriguing details working for their general hyped-up appeal: being Brazilian, sexy, young, mostly female, spirited, and seemingly humorous. To a good degree the band uses these identifiers as accurate helpers, but there are also times that the act and the music wear thin.

The one aspect that the group isn't always able (/trying) to disguise is how fresh they are to the music game. CSS originally formed in 2003 when none of the members, save the lone male Adriano Cintra, had any musical experience. Reportedly the group practiced tirelessly for the next two years and became accustomed to their respective instruments, which includes keyboards, drum kit, guitar, electric bass, and of course vocals. In some part the result of their ardent rehearsing is a high-energy, sexed-up and invigoratingly organic song style. A slight portion ends up being cheesy.

The brand of cheesy that CSS brings is a style that indie fans have conventionally gravitated to. Dance beats, overly poppy but simple synth hooks, and repetitive and joke-y lyrics have always been Yo La Tengo's numero uno fan's guilty pleasure. Just look at the way groups like the Gossip and Peaches survive and you'll find no argument that it can be good to have upbeat, fun rhythms. Luckily CSS doesn't pitfall into one dimensionality in that way.

While the humorous, indie/pop culture-referencing titles are entirely enjoyable ("Let's Make Love and Listen to Death From Above," "Meeting Paris Hilton," "Music is My Hot Hot Sex," and "Fuckoff is Not the Only Thing You Have to Show") they don't make the songs good enough to back them up. The music of the Strokes-like "Patins," electro-dance punk "Alala," and the album single "Off the Hook" are the real parts of the band that give them their potential.

Likewise listeners go ga-ga over song themes like that of the wild sided "Alcohol" where lead singer Lovefoxxx suggests, "So tell me/ he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-hey/ do you wanna drink some alcohol?" Rather it is the catchy chorus refrain (and obvious foreign-accented English), "Whenever I look at you/ I don't know what to do/ Whenever you talk to me/ I don't know what is true" that caught so many ears in the first place.

Cansei De Ser Sexy is an intriguing group with a lot of budding talent and real potential. Although most people got hyped for this, their debut full length album, I'll be more excited to see what they do next, and in what intensely energetic way they will do it.
