» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

» Live: Surfer Blood/The Drums at Lincoln Hall, Chicago, IL - Remember when Weezer used to put together records that you could sing along to and rock out to? That's what Surfer Blood's show was like!

Stones Throw Records loves hip-hop music.

That should be an obvious thing to say, given that the label that puts out hip-hop records. What I'm talking about, though, is more than just "likes a lot" or "really enjoys" - I'm talking about "love." I'm talking about something intangible yet highly noticeable when absent. For Stones Throw, hip-hop isn't just what they do - it's obviously so much more than that. It's what they live, eat, breath, sleep in, wake up with, and bathe in. Hip-hop isn't just something they do, but the very thing they love to do.

It's easy to tell when you're watching or hearing people truly love what they do, because it rubs off on you. You can feel it yourself, listening to a song or watching a performance. The joy is infectious. Everything about Stones Throw 101, the videos, the interviews, the mix CD, radiates this lively, vibrant feeling.

Stones Throw 101 is a celebration of Stones Throw Records 101st release, and a treat for any hip-hop fan since Stones Throw is the home to some of the best in underground hip-hop, like Madlib and Wildchild and Peanut Butter Wolf. You get a DVD with 15 videos, along with a bunch of extra features like interviews and TV appearances. You also get a 42-track CD put together by Peanut Butter Wolf that mixes classic Stones Throw tracks from throughout their history with unreleased tracks and remixes.

This is unusual, interesting, unexpected and creative material - everything Stones Throw is all about. Nothing about it is crassly commercial. The videos are like nothing you'd see on MTV, and the songs are like nothing you're going to hear on any FM radio station. Listening to the CD, watching the videos, you're immediately struck by how clearly every artists represented here made this because they felt it, and loved it, and not because they thought it was going to sell or reach some target demographic or some such thing.

Simply put, after going through Stones Throw 101, whether you're new to the Stones Throw world or a longtime fan, you can't help but feel compelled to join these artists in their celebration. We can thank them for sharing their love with us, and pray that they continue to do so successfully for quite a long time.
