» Full Dark, No Stars - Stephen King's new novella questions mankind's ability to trust others.

» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

» Live: Surfer Blood/The Drums at Lincoln Hall, Chicago, IL - Remember when Weezer used to put together records that you could sing along to and rock out to? That's what Surfer Blood's show was like!

Dood, Chisel.Drill.Hammer are the bzomb! I first stumbled upon these Iowans many moons ago in the living room of a house in Urbana, Illinois where they were playing with their homies in Braid. (Braid played that show as "The Hairtwist 2000" - remember that one?!) I've been waiting for a full-length from these guys ever since and it seems the wait was worth it. This record is spot-on cool.

C.D.H isn't from Iowa City anymore though. I guess they realized you can't really be cool and be from Iowa, so they packed up their furling rock and headed to Chicago, the city where everyone is cool, even if they're really just pretentious. Now they're all that AND they're from the music Mecca of the Midwest. I'm thinking these guys are going to be picking up Doritos sponsorships they'll be so cool.

So, what do they sound like? Well, Chisel.Drill.Hammer come out of that storied 'hood of instrumental rock, but somewhere along the way they sublet a few apartments in the outlying communities of Mathville and Lowendsignaldrench Park. You can tell these guys are students of the art and at the same time you know they can play some Metallica covers. I'd say anyone interested in anything from C-Clamp to Boys Life, Hum to Christie Front Drive should check this out. Very intelligent, very moving. Sing-alongsters enthralled with the Get Up Kids and the like need not apply.
