» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

"There's heartbreak all over the EP. Every day that goes by you just realize more and more that people's relationships aren't such a fairy tale and that discontent and heartache is universal." So goes a quote from the 8-minute short feature video on Paper Route's website that showcases their artistic ability across multiple media. Fortunately, heartbreak has never sounded so sweet.

Forging a sonic meld of arrhythmic synth arrangements, lush harmonies, samples and more standard instrumental fare both rock and acoustic, Paper Route's debut EP is absolutely stunning from the outset. "Second Chances" begins with a choral unison and closes in much the same way, but carving space in between are industrial drum arrangements and lilting harmonies from singer/songwriter and friend Kate York.

Other songs offer beauty in various formats, from the melancholic "Only Words," which features the strongest vocal performance on the album, to the light, acoustic-driven "City Trucks." "Cityscape" is a largely instrumental track incorporating heavier elements underneath a xylophone melody.

The members of the Nashville-based Paper Route are now at work on their first full-length, which comes as good news to those unsatisfied with the mere six tracks available here. However, it's hard to complain when a band successfully combines the epic nature of Euro-rock bands like Sigur Rós with the acoustic beauty of others like Without Gravity. Paper Route is easily the next great band to come out of Nashville.
