» Full Dark, No Stars - Stephen King's new novella questions mankind's ability to trust others.

MUSIC

» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

» Live: Surfer Blood/The Drums at Lincoln Hall, Chicago, IL - Remember when Weezer used to put together records that you could sing along to and rock out to? That's what Surfer Blood's show was like!

I wouldn't exactly call my dad a tastemaker. He's had an Eddie Money tape stuck in the boombox he refuses to replace for the last ten years. His shoe of choice is the all white "Court Classic" which is sold at Costco. I have yet to eat a meal with him that doesn't include a scotch and end with him cursing the new stain on his shirt. And yet, for as uncool as he is, he will not stop raving about Eluvium's new album, Copia.

My dad won't shut up for good reason - Eluvium has produced an album of twelve gorgeous compositions. Matthew Cooper's previous albums were a mix of droning beauty and waves of repetition that made it wonderfully easy to slip on a pair of headphones and get lost in the soothing textures. Sounding fuller, the music on Copia would fit in just as well at an upscale concert hall as it does coming out of a set of speakers connected to an iPod in a hipster's Brooklyn apartment. Piano notes gracefully float over layers of ambient synthesizers, creating elegantly moody and atmospheric pieces. While there has clearly been a degree of evolution from Talk Amongst The Trees and An Accidental Memory In The Case Of Death (Cooper's previous full-lengths for Temporary Residence), none of Eluvium's previous effects are lost with his new offering; the music still winds its way through your mind, but at the same time it moves the soul as well.

Late last year, a week after I received Copia, I was faced with a tough decision; I found myself perilously close to putting it on my best of 2006 year-end list. Technically, it didn't come out until this week, but it was one of the most amazing albums I heard last year. Not wanting to rock the boat, I decided to play by the rules and wait until next December, when Copia will undoubtedly still rank at the top of my list.
