And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

Though they aren't really doing anything drastically different from bands like Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel, or Apples in Stereo, The Shimmer Kids UnderPop Association put forth a solid effort nonetheless with The Natural Riot, an album that wins on account of the sheer likeability of the music on it.

Shimmer Kids UnderPop Association took a bit of The Pretty Things-esque British psychedelia and strained it through a pure, sometimes really catchy, pop filter to yield The Natural Riot. The Shimmer Kids UnderPop Association open the album with "Model Kit," which, despite poor production, lets you know what you're in for from the get-go. With everything from touches of atmospherics to complete garage sensibilities, the song starts off the album well, right before heading into the slower, less danceable, "Like Candy, Like Poison." You'll probably end up dancing to this, too, albeit slowly. The atmospherics show up again on "Matadors in Red" and the Apples in Stereo-esque "The Getaway" and continue throughout the rest of the album.

Aside from sounding similar to The Pretty Things and The Apples in Stereo, not to mention most every other neo-psychedlic pop band, Shimmer Kids UnderPop Association often sound very Beach Boys-inspired. "Another Planet" and "Going in Circles" both sound like they could be straight off of Pet Sounds, a striking resemblance that can be attributed to everything from their vocal harmonies to the use of bells.

A low point on the album is definitely "Miss Classified," an uninspired and repetitive song about a girl who "keeps her heart behind the police lines." The low points on the album, however, do not take away from its overall aesthetic very much. Despite these few low points and the fact that the band wears its influences on its sleeve, and also the occasional really noticeable bout of bad production, The Natural Riot is a fine release on the part of Shimmer Kids UnderPop Association.
