» Full Dark, No Stars - Stephen King's new novella questions mankind's ability to trust others.

» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

Emery Reel
…For and Acted Upon Through Diversions
First Flight Records

Rating: NR/10 ?

October 1, 2004
The sound of Emery Reel is an amalgamation of feelings, emotions, volume, and depth. It's the sound of scarred beauty. It's bright but not sunny, sad but not depressing, strong but not tough, deep but not drowning. It's good driving music, sleeping music, studying music. It's great for peace; It's perfect for war. It's the most universal records I've come across. If this record doesn't make you feel something, I don't know what will.

…For and Acted Upon Through Diversions is a work of seven lush, elegant, futuristic, and natural sounding instrumental pieces that each strike a chord somewhere within you. It's always interesting, never boring. The fact that a paranoid schizophrenic coined the title phrase is uncannily appropriate when taking into account the volatility of this record. Especially on tracks like "A New Beginning" where the sound varies from whispering and dreamlike melodic calms to thundering instrumental explosions that hit your ears like blistering sunlight on your eyes, jarring you from slumber. It is impossible to be ignored.

I'm a believer that music is emotion in the form of sound, and that emotion is universal. But universal does not necessarily mean accessible. It's safe to say that those with ridged guidelines about music preferences or those who only enjoy the current MTV artist crop may hear nothing but incongruous noise. Emery Reel is an exercise in noise and emotion, to tone your ears and your soul. If either is of the couch potato clan, then Emery Reel probably isn't for you.

Although they certainly should be.
