FIELD NOTES

Can a better fantasy help us create a better reality? That is one of the head-scratching philosophical questions posited by the organizers of "Park Life: The New Utopia," a group show opening this weekend at the multifunctional Subliminal Projects gallery space in Los Angeles.

» "The basement is full of abandoned science labs, labs that have been empty for ten years maybe, with equipment scattered everywhere, old notebooks, chemical residue, dust, dirt, soot, stacked furniture, whining ventilation. Acids left over in gallon jugs of thick glass. A bottle of wine left as if it had been opened to celebrate the last experiment just before the whole place was summarily deserted. Dark trees shone through the high windows." Abandoned labs as recycled academic space. NOT RELATED: "'Writing about music is like dancing about architecture'. At first blush, the claim is a smugly dismissive one: verbal descriptions of music are doomed to be pointlessly, perhaps even ridiculously, inferior to actual music. Yet writers are never counseled against attempting to evoke paintings or smells or faces or feelings or buildings or the nonmelodic sounds of jackhammers, thunder, or snoring. What was so elusive about music that it couldn't be captured by words?  [07.03.2009 12:00 pm]

» "In a warning to museums snapping up the work of some of today's hottest artists, the AXA Art Insurance book Plastic Art: A Precarious Success Story states that plastic-heavy pieces by Damien Hirst, Matthew Barney, and Jeff Koons will be 'difficult, costly, and nerve-racking to preserve'." MORE OVERPRICED STUFF: "This is pretty hilarious. An MWM Graphics Field Agent in Eastern Washington came across these aluminum Mountain Dew 'Americana' Bottles that I designed last Summer. Yup, in an antique store. And selling for 8 bucks a pop. Not bad, especially considering they made 9 million of them." [07.02.2009 08:00 am]

» Health Architecture Part I: "Different kinds of health architecture in different parts of the world. From Portugal, Netherlands, Japan, Sudan and Burkina Faso." NOT RELATED: "Remove unwanted street clutter including stone cladding, backlit signs, fast food shops and people with this handy interactive Urban Gentrification Machine. Remember, artificial stone cladding is not just aesthetically wrong, it's morally wrong too. If you like it you are a degenerate and a pervert. Move out. Leave this place for the decent folk." STILL NOT RELATED: "To the protesters' relief, Eminem failed to win Best Album that night [in 2001]. He lost to Steely Dan, a band named after a dildo. One song on Two Against Nature is delivered from the perspective of a pedophile." Richard Beck goes on at length about Eminem's latest, The Relapse[07.01.2009 07:00 am]

MUSIC

» A Hawk And A Hacksaw - Jeremy Barnes and Heather Trost are testament to the fact that, for all of our world's shrinking and flattening in the digital age, place still matters. Originating in Jeremy Barnes' native Albuquerque, the group is the antithesis of today's shifting cultural and musical realities, having relocated to Budapest for the recording of their new album, Délivrance.

COLUMN

» Missed the Boat #1 - In a time when more albums than ever are being made and fewer publications can afford to exist, more gatekeepers than ever are needed to separate the wheat from the chaff. Here's this month's batch of unreviewed but worth your time records that may have been overlooked.

COLUMN

» Glaciers of Ice: Volume 40 - Having taken a month off for May, the regular LAS hip-hop roundup returns for June with the scoop on a host of new jams, from Georgia Anne Muldrow's post-Stones Throw forray to the hottest new MC out of London. Thrown in for fun are references to David Hasselhof, Hall and Oates, Billy Idol, and Shia LeBeouf.

BOUND + PRINT REVIEW

The Given Day - As with most of his work, Dennis Lehane's new novel is set in and around Boston. A literary gift that keeps on giving, The Given Day weaves together historical fact and finely wrought characters into a touching, heart-tugging tale of remarkable power. [11.10.2008 by Cory Tendering]

Havana Nocturne - In his heavily-researched, thoroughly-sourced book, true-crime novelist and television screenwriter T.J. English delivers a nitty-gritty account of how the most raucous and notorious social and criminal circles overlapped for a decade in Cuba, and how it all came tumbling down. [11.04.2008 by Eric J Herboth]

Reading the OED - By setting out to digest the entirety of the Oxford English Dictionary - a book so massive that it took 6243 pounds of ink to print its 350-million characters - and then write a book about it, word junkie Ammon Shea did us all a favor. [10.14.2008 by Eric J Herboth]

33 1/3: 20 Jazz Funk Greats - In the 54th installment of Continuum's 33-1/3 series, Matmos member Drew Daniel examines Throbbing Gristle's seminal 1979 album. Detailed and personal, the book that is a small masterpiece in itself, jam-packed with memories, interviews and dissection of songs. [09.18.2008 by Daniel Svanberg]

33 1/3: Gentlemen - While not diving into the excesses or tawdry anecdotes the way Nikki Sixx would, Gendron slightly titillates while using the kind-of sordid stories as a context to describe the duress and emotional fragility from which the Afghan Whigs' album sprung. [09.11.2008 by Kevin Alfoldy]

Alcohol Can Be A Gas! - Less than 2-percent of corn grown in the United States is fed to human beings, and David Blume's book on the potential of ethanol drives home the fact that fuel and food aren't in competition and, in fact, should be complimentary industries. [09.09.2008 by Eric J Herboth]

LA CINEMA FILM + REVIEW

CINEMA

» Gran Torino - Conspicuously absent from the list of nominees for the 81st installment of the Academy Awards, airing this weekend, is this against the grain tragedy that evokes all the conflicted feelings of America and sadly might be director and star Clint Eastwood's last role as a leading man.
[02.20.2009 by Hugh Slesinger]

CINEMA

» Vicky Cristina Barcelona - Although considered by many to be somewhat of a return to form for the celebrated New Yorker, this naughty Euro comedy failed to secure Woody Allen his 15th writing nomination at this year's Academy Awards. The film stars Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz and Scarlett Johansson, along with a small but strong supporting cast.
[02.16.2009 by Jonah Flicker]

CINEMA

» Synecdoche, New York - Revered screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, taking on the role of director, propels the meta-film concept to ever-spiraling extremes. The result? A film so complex that you can basically say anything you want about it, as long as it's convoluted.
[12.15.2008 by Susan Howson]

CINEMA

» Let The Right One In - With a pending North American remake scheduled for 2009, much to the objections of its original director, this beautifully rendered Swedish picture is a truly great film worth letting into your cinematic queue, that just happens to have a vampire at its heart.
[11.17.2008 by Jon Burke]

CINEMA

» Wu - The Story of the Wu-Tang Clan, director Gerald K. Barclay's inside-the-circle look at one of the most influential music collectives of all time, will premiere on BET network tonight and be released on DVD next week.
[11.13.2008 by Jonah Flicker]

CINEMA

» The Cottage - What makes Paul Andrew Williams' latest film such a great horror experience is the characters involved in its ridiculous scenario, as well as the much-hyped director's ploy, ala Speilberg, to wait an outrageous amount of time before revealing the shark or, in this case, The Farmer. The buildup works.
