» Full Dark, No Stars - Stephen King's new novella questions mankind's ability to trust others.

» The Top 30 Albums of 2010 - Fashionably, fabulously late, our favorite music (and believe me, there was a LOT) of 2010, the year that some have called the best year for music ever. And only some of those fools work here. Plenty of usual suspects, lots of ties and a few surprises that I won't spoil, including our unexpected #1.

» Live: Surfer Blood/The Drums at Lincoln Hall, Chicago, IL - Remember when Weezer used to put together records that you could sing along to and rock out to? That's what Surfer Blood's show was like!

July 8, 2008
Having been touted as "the summer's greenest festival" by event organizers, the 2008 Rothbury Festival, held the weekend of July 4th at the "one-of-a-kind" Double JJ Ranch in Michigan, lived up to the hype for the most part. The weather was spectacular, the event's security detail was populated by easygoing and non-aggressive types, and there was more music than any human could possibly absorb.

In my own festivalgoing experience, Rothbury was probably the best run, cleanest, well decorated and invested in festival venue I've had the pleasure of attending. There were recycling and compost stations staffed by hundreds of volunteers and spread throughout both the camping ares and the performance areas, and more than half a million biodegradable cups were used over the weekend. Despite the emphasis on sustainability there were still the usual piles of broken chairs, popped air mattresses, and camping trash in the end, but it seemed that Rothbury attendees were definitely more conscious of the trash they brought, generated, and left behind than your average summer event visitor. All in all everyone seemed to be having a really good time - 40,000+ people partying safely and cleanly is a pretty cool way to celebrate the 4th of July.

The Black Keys.

Some of the tens of thousands in attendance.

The massive, curtained stage.

Seconds before taking a ball to the dome.

The forest at night.

Big balls on the crowd.

Keller Williams and Keith Moseley.

Part of the festival's excellent recycling program.
